You are Invited to A Tea Party

Common Ground Health Clinic (CGHC) invites folks of all ages and from all corners of Greater New Orleans to get to know historic Algiers while supporting the clinic’s ongoing work by spending an evening with us on Saturday, August 18. Events begin at 7:00 p. m. with an Art Walk down Teche Street, just a few blocks from the Mississippi River and the Algiers Ferry, beginning and ending with a Garden Tea Party at the Teche Street Community Garden (813 Teche St.). The party is set to continue until 11:00 p. m.

The Art Walk is an opportunity to engage with the rich history and culture of Old Algiers, and will feature the work of local artists Ralph Bush, Vince Craige, Micah Learned, Joe Parker, MBol, Jafar M. Pierre, NuAwlons Nate Scott, Mohawk Hunters Tribal Chief Vertis Vincent, and others, as well as highlighting Algiers historian Cathy Smith, of Village Ovah da Rivah fame, and the Community Print Shop. The younger generation of Algerines will also be represented, as the youth participants in CGHC’s Youth Art Workshops and The Young Hunters Mardi Gras Indians Beading Class display their work.

The Garden Tea Party will include a selection of locally sourced, healthy treats, including iced herbal teas brewed by the CGHC herbalist team (ginger-mint, hibiscus-rose, and rosemary). We will be serving delicious appetizers from several area restaurants, including The Olive Branch Café,  Nolavore, Dumaine Street Farm, Mondo, The Green Goddess, Whole Foods, Sahara Café, Meltdown Pops, Liberty’s Kitchen, St. James Cheese Company, Satsuma Café, Taste of the Caribbean, Gattusso’s, and Superfood Bar.

Admission to the Garden Tea Party is $10 and includes all food and beverage items; tickets will be available at the garden gate. There is no charge to come out and enjoy the Art Walk.

Film Fests Galore in Hollywood South

The New Orleans film society is one of the best film societies in this writer’s humble opinion.  The organization doesn’t just throw one big gala a year; it feeds the cinematic soul all year long with unique showings, free films (both art house and mainstream flicks), and a ton of mini film fests, two of which are happening in this month.
