Groceries/Sundries

Due to size restrains, the French Quarter and many other neighborhoods do not have supermarkets.  What is available is a wonderful assortment of specialty shops such as the Croissant D`Or Patisserie (504-524-4663) at 617 Ursulines Ave. and The Decandence Shoppe at 806 N. Rampart St. (504-529-8874).

Fresh produce and seafood can be found at the French Market.  An inviting array of Italian deli items (and arguably the best muffaletta in New Orleans) can be found at the Central Grocery at 923 Decatur (504-620-0174).

The Quarter also boasts a compact and well-stocked grocery store, Rouse’s, at 701 Royal St.  Rouse’s is open from 6:00 a. m. to 1:00 a. m.  You can find pretty much everything you might need there, including liquor and gourmet deli items (504.523-1353).

Rouse’s recently opened a flagship grocery store of the highest order at 701 Baronne St. in the CBD.  Arguably the best grocery store in the state, this Rouse’s features a vast wine selection, sundries, natural and organic foods, Pho of the day, a coffee and gelato bar, bulk nuts and snacks, an impresive selection of Louisiana food products, a floral department, an extensive collection of frozen foods, and much more.  You have to see it to appreciate it.  Hours are 6:00 am to Midnight daily.  Call 504-227-3838 for more info.

Matassa’s Market ‎is another compact grocery store in the French Quarter.  It is located at 1001 Dauphine St. at the corner of St. Phillip St. (504-412-8700).   What makes this neighborhood market so great is that in addition to everyday groceries and sundries, it also has a deli, daily hot meal specials, and a delivery service.

Corner convenience stores are located in all New Orleans neighborhoods.  They offer the basics and are a quick and easy option for picking up a gallon of milk.  The best of these markets is called Quarter Master.  It is located at 1100 Bourbon St. and is open 24-hrs a day (504-529-1416).  Like Matassa’s, it has an extensive deli and offers food for delivery.

For a great cross section of groceries and sundries check out Walgreen’s.  In or near the Quarter are three locations:  134 Royal St, 900 Canal St, and 619 Decatur St.   Similar in offerings is a CVS Pharmacy at 800 Canal St. (504-528-7099).

Outside of the French Quarter, you can find Conseco’s, a local grocery store with an excellent selection of goods, at 3135 Esplanade Ave. and a Whole Foods Market Uptown at 5600 Magazine St. (504-899-9119).

A bus ride away from the Quarter is a Walmart store.  The store has a grocery section, an optician’s office, a nail salon, and other speciality shops.  It is located at 1901 Tchoupitoulas St. near the corner of Jackson Ave.  For more info and store hours call 504-522-4142.
